Drive School at Broadford

Track Details: State Motorcycle Complex, Broadford, VIC, Australia. 2.16 km long, 10 metres wide with 12 corners.

Broadford was the first time I took my Mini out on a track for my first Performance Drive School lesson with Drive Events.

It was equal parts exciting and equal parts daunting! I had never really driven my Mini beyond the speed limit before and I had no idea what to expect on the day.

Nevertheless, I made the 90km drive from home to Broadford, determined to take that first step in racing.

It was a freezing July morning, and I was shivering during the safety briefing. We were told about the various flags. Green to race, yellow to slow down and watch out for an incident, red slow down and drive to the pit exit as there's a major incident, chequered flag indicating the race conclusion etc. So far so good! Not that different to Formula 1.

The rest of the day, was day one in driving kindergarten! We had classroom instruction sessions followed by time out on the track to practice our lessons. Each track session was divided into two parts, the first with a driving instructor in the passenger seat and the second on my own.

The experience of driving my mini to its potential was exhilarating! But most importantly, I realised how much I didn't know about racing.

On the day, Drive Events covered several topics (in no particular order) including the racing line, entering corners at the right (safe) speed, where to look, when to brake, turn and accelerate, driving & seating position, relaxing when driving, what makes cars spin, what to do when cars spin etc. And this was just Level 1.

Needless to say, I'm going back for Levels 2, 3 & 4.

xoxo,

Dark Racer.
